These are the terms for using Afterglow: the sky, the memorials in it, and the workbook we sell.
Afterglow is a shared sky for the people we have lost. Every person somebody loved becomes a star, and every star can open into a memorial page. It is still being built, and parts of it open before others.
Some of what you see is a demonstration, and everybody in it is invented. The sky shown before you sign in, and anything the interface labels Demo, uses fictional people and placeholder photographs to show how Afterglow works. Candles and memories left on a demonstration stay in your browser and disappear. Real memorials are different: they are saved, they are shared with whoever the keeper allows, and they are never mixed with the demonstration.
Lighting a star creates a memorial and places it in the shared sky. The person's dates decide where their star sits, which is why the position never moves and is never random. One person has one star: if somebody who is already in the sky is added again, it becomes a contribution to the star that exists rather than a second one.
A keeper and a contributor are not the same thing. Writing a memory or offering a photograph never grants the right to publish it — the keeper decides what appears, and a photograph stays private until they say otherwise. Contributing does not make you a keeper, and it does not give you a say over the page.
A candle is a quiet acknowledgement, not a score. Nothing on a star is counted or ranked in front of the people grieving, and a cause of death never appears on a star's face. If a memorial fund is linked, it points at a campaign the family already runs: Afterglow never takes, holds or passes on that money, and takes no cut of it.
Feature requests, funding ideas and bug reports are private by default. You keep ownership of what you write and give us permission to use it to evaluate and build Afterglow. We may publish a rewritten, non-identifying summary and progress status. We will ask before publishing your original words or anything that identifies you or another person.
Use safety reporting honestly. Do not knowingly make a false report, impersonate somebody, submit unlawful material, probe other people's data or use the service to harass anyone. If somebody is in immediate danger, contact the emergency services; Afterglow is not monitored as an emergency service.
What Your Brain Is Doing During Grief is pay what you want. You choose the amount, and nothing is a real choice: the free copy is the same file, complete, with nothing held back and nothing added for paying. Nobody in the first month of a loss should be deciding whether they can afford an explanation of their own head.
Biobrainbuddies Ltd is not registered for VAT, so no VAT is charged on anything you pay. If you pay, the card is handled by Stripe and we never see it. The file is attached to an email sent straight away, along with a link that works for seven days; the attachment is the copy to keep.
If you paid and wish you had not, tell us and we will refund it. Within fourteen days we will refund it for any reason or none, which is your right in law for something bought online. After fourteen days, ask anyway — for an amount you chose yourself on a grief resource, we are not going to argue about the date.
Once you have it, it is yours. Keep it, print it, and give it to anyone who needs it. The one thing we ask is that you do not sell it.
What Your Brain Is Doing During Grief explains the neuroscience of grieving. It is not medical advice, therapy, or a substitute for either. Grief is not a malfunction and this is not a treatment for it.

It is not advertising or behavioural tracking, and you can turn it off at any time in our Privacy page. The Privacy page explains what is measured and why; these terms are not a request for consent to tracking.
Afterglow is run by Biobrainbuddies Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales, company number 15351689, whose registered office is 81 Oxford Road, Gloucester, Gloucestershire, GL1 3EE, United Kingdom. “We” on this page means that company.
The name, the writing, the design and the workbook belong to Biobrainbuddies Ltd. Please do not republish them as your own. Everything else on the page — the idea that grief needs somewhere to go — is yours to take.
We will keep this site up and honest. We cannot promise it will never go down, never contain a mistake, or that Afterglow will ship on any particular date. It is being built by one person, alongside grief of their own.
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales.
Afterglow is still being built, so these terms will change as more of it opens. If a change matters to you — what we do with a memorial, what we do with your money, what we do with your email address — you will be told before it takes effect, not afterwards.
